Statement of Physical Activity Accomplishment
Participation in the competitive swimming team of Clube Paineiras do Morumby
(student: Olivia de Thuin Aguiar)
This semester I continued to participate in the competitive swimming team of Clube Paineiras do Morumby, São Paulo. We practiced six days a week from August to early December. Practices usually took place from four to seven thirty at night (on Saturdays practice would be in the morning). From four to five in the afternoon we would do physical preparation outside of the water which included:
-weightlifting three days a week
- exercises such as sit ups, push ups, jumps
-elastic strap exercises for shoulder protection and strength gaining
-various types of exercises with heavy madison balls
-stretching in pairs for improvement in flexibility
Our coach gave a lot of attention towards the shoulder protection exercises because it is very common for swimmers to have shoulder problems and the stretching because flexible swimmers tend to swim much better, also considering that stretching is good for muscle relaxation.
We did swimming practice from five to seven thirty at night. Our coach divided our training sessions into three groups: those who swim long distance races, those who swim specific styles( these include: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle) and their races were usually from 100 to 200 meters and those who swim short distance races such as the 50 and 100 meters. I practiced with those who swim short distance races because in competitions my best performance is in 50 and 100 meters freestyle.
My practices were broken down into three intensities of aerobics and an aerobics. Since I swim 50 and 100 meters freestyle I would focus more on the anaerobics which would give me more strength and explosion.
With all of these exercises I would feel my body become stronger and stronger but this would only happen little by little. My presence in each practice session was extremely important because you can only achieve the wanted result of the physical training if you work hard day after day.
Usually my tactic in the competition for the 100 meters freestyle (my best race) was to have a strong second fifty meters because I had a weak aerobic level making me get exhausted if I put too much strength in my first fifty meters. This semester my coach and I decided to change and have a strong start, since my aerobic capacity increased these passed couple of months.
We had great results with these extensive hours of training. In the state championship, “Campeopnato Paulista”, I got eighth place lowering my time in one second which is a hard accomplishment for a short distance race. My teammates also had wonderful results acknowledging the hard work that my coach and all of his helpers did in preparing our team. Two weeks later was the national championship “Campeonato Brasileiro” which took place in Fortaleza, Ceará. My results were even better in this one, I lowered another second making it into the finals. In the finals I lowered a few tenths of a second finishing in fifth place, which was much better than in the “Campeonato Paulista”. I am really proud of my results this semester because they showed that if I practice hard, I may dream of one day achieving a medal in the state and national championships.
Swimming can also help me in other areas of my life. It provides me with self discipline, concentration for when it is needed and it helps me have a better reaction towards moments with pressure. I usually get really nervous before an important competition, but as time goes by I get less and less nervous. The same will happen when I have an important job interview in the future.
I consider my participation in swimming satisfactory. I dedicated an extensive amount of time and effort in this activity and also was rewarded with great results as a consequence of this. I missed a couple of pratices because of school; sometimes I had to stay after school for help from other teachers making me arrive late to my swimming practices. It is pretty hard to manage both school and swimming practice at the same time. Next year I intend to continue in the competitive swimming team of Clube Paineiras do Morumby and reach even better results.
